Advantages and Disadvantages of an Internet-Based Point of Sale (POS) System

The “point of sale” in any retail store, restaurant, grocery store, and so on refers to the location where transactions typically occur (i.e. check-out). At most retail stores, the POS terminal consists of the following: computer hardware, computer software, checkout hardware, checkout software, and any hardware specific to a a particular store. Computer hardware includes the computer component and monitor, while checkout hardware include a printer for checks and receipts, in addition to software that processes credit cards.

While point of sale systems come in many shapes, sizes, and price tags, we are only going to focus on one type of POS system in this article. The contents of this article will outline the advantages and disadvantages of internet-based point of sale software.

Advantages of a Web-Based Point of Sale (POS) System

– Compatible with most computers as long as they are connected to the Internet (perfect for businesses that already own POS hardware)

– POS solutions often customizable to suit your business needs

– Costs a fraction of traditional POS Systems (ideal for independent retailers)

– Software hosted on secure servers and in multiple data centers, so your information will always be backed up

Disadvantages of Web-Based Point of Sale (POS) System

– Could be problematic with a slow Internet connection

– If you do not already own POS hardware, you will need to purchase it separately

– Web-based POS Systems often come with monthly fees

Whichever system you decide to purchase, be sure to research your options carefully before purchasing any type of point of sale system. Assess your business needs, objectives, constraints and budget. Whatever system you choose, however, it will save you time and money, as well as increase productivity, in the long run. The right POS software will be able to help you increase profit margins, track your inventory, increase efficiency, help improve customer relationships, as well as manage other important business relationships.
