If I were to broadly define the term social media marketing, I would describe it as the process of promoting a website or a business through social media channels which includes social networking sites. While, you may not take this seriously, it is a process through which you will receive lots of links with businesses, with people, and it will get you a lot of exposure.

By doing so, you will help to drive a lot of traffic towards your website and this will slowly determine your popularity. This is one of the most cost promotional methods being used today. Your website could be anything, big or small, products or services, SMO (Social Media Optimization) will help make your website profitable in no time. As a part of promotion, email efficiency is important and so is customer feed back. For example, if you have an e-learning website, you can offer free assessment to start off with.

There are various other things which can be offered to make it more appealing to the customers. Like free assessment, you can offer surveys, poll, questionnaires and other techniques to gather customer information. This will help promote you, your product or service to a broad spectrum of audiences.

People, who have not yet tried out any of these social media marketing techniques, are the ones who either do not understand its efficiency or do not know much about social media marketing strategies and its advantages. Or they are the ones who do not know how to use this for their own benefit. If you are amongst any one of the categories above, I suggest you pull up your socks and get started. To begin with you can join social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut, LinkedIn and You Tube etc. You can start online communities and address the issues related to your product and services through forums and discussions. This will help you know your customers better and they will know you and trust you more.

You can also add links like Digg, RSS Feeds, or Stumble Upon to your websites. You may ask why so. The answer is simple, the more links you add the better chances of your company to be found in search engines. The search engines like Yahoo, Google or Bing, throw up the most popular names on the very first page. This also helps to brand you as an expert or authority and leads searchers to your products and services. Therefore, do not loose out on such opportunities.

The marketing world is changing fast. Increasing your digital footprint with social media optimization is a great way to reach your target audience as they move from old media to the new Social Media. In today’s environment companies need to increase their online presence through PPC, SEO and Social Media to increase their exposure and to engage with their prospects and client.
