SEO – Post Google Update

Googles updates have rocked the very foundation SEO beliefs, facts and practices have been built upon, and that was their plan, if Google doesn’t make these changes then new sites will never be able to compete and therefore their new customers/content would cease to exist.

The days of just “out backlinking” your competition are gone forever. Finding an exact match domain and throwing 1000’s of anchored profiles at it is no longer money in the bank, if your link building doesn’t appear natural you and your site are sure to feel Google’s wrath, there is no 2 ways about it. However, there are still plenty of ways around the latest SEO pitfalls.

While the updates are still pretty fresh, some search engine optimization strategies have persevered and the strategies that have remained successful, even in the aftermath of both most recent algorithm changes normally referred to as Google’s Panda and Penguin updates are the complex strategies.

By complex, I don’t mean regular old pyramids or link wheels, from what I can gather, based on cold hard factual statistics Google wants link building to appear as though others are linking in to your site as well. So logically, if 100 different people have linked to your site, you wouldn’t have the same anchor text on all your backlinks, all your backlinks wouldn’t come from one type of site, and all of your backlinks wouldn’t be coming from low OBL, high PR, dofollow blogs.

The pyramids I personally use are not revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination, but they continue to work because I pay super close attention to detail. If I’m targeting 3 keywords, I don’t use those 3 keywords as is on all 3 tiers of one pyramid, instead I mix up anchor text as much as possible. I’ll use some different anchors like “click here”, “check this out”, and even a few raw URL’s as apposed to 100% anchored backlinks. Of course I have many more theories, and use many more new strategies I’m not totally comfortable sharing until more testing is done.

To say this close attention to detail is the only reason I’ve remained successful in keeping my site’s search engine ranking in check would be a flat out lie, its way too soon to tell exactly whats working so well for me, but by understanding, and most importantly paying attention to the smaller details of these updates all while compulsively recording every fluctuation in results – I greatly increase my chance of success.

I know some folks may consider this article a boring read, however I do believe its a necessary read. No matter what type of SEO service you decide to use, or if you like to do your own SEO I think being armed with as much information as possible can only improve your chances of staying ahead of the SEO learning curve.

Now more than ever you must be diligent in keeping detailed statistics, and refer back to those statistics before any drastic SEO moves are made. Good luck!
