Before we get into the specifics of why the keywords you’re using in your search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy are out of date, it is important that you answer a few questions. How long ago was your website created? When you update your portfolio, do you look at the existing projects or just add your new clients to the top? When was the last time you updated the content? If the answer to any of these questions was ‘a few years ago’ then your SEO really is in desperate need of a refresher.
But why does it matter if the keywords you’re using in your SEO strategy are a little outdated? They’ve been working fine for the past few years and you haven’t noticed a drop in sales, so who’s to say that they aren’t working now? At the end of day, language changes. The ways that people were searching for particular products or services two years ago might be very different to the way that people are searching for the same products and services today. And, if you’re not going with the language of the time, you’re going to be invisible to potential clients.
Just say that you were working in SEO and offered a service that allowed you to remove bad search engine results from Google. A few years ago, this service would have been called ‘defensive SEO’. This key phrase eventually became ‘defensive search’ and it is now commonly known as ‘online reputation management (ORM)’. These changes have been so drastic that there is no way of telling what it will become known as in the future. If your SEO strategy is still using the originally keywords, you’re losing out on a large audience.
So, what sort of research have you done into the keywords that you’re using for your SEO strategy lately? Have you been using one of the online tools that are out there to see what sort of competition your keywords are facing? Have you been looking at your competitor’s websites to see what kind of keywords they’re using? If you find that you really do need to update the keywords of your SEO strategy, you need to go about removing those bad search results.
This involves doing some research into what keywords you should be using in your SEO strategy, and then rewriting all of your website’s content so that these words are reflected. To ensure that you don’t run into the same problem in the future, you need to schedule in time that you can spend on developing your SEO strategy and keeping it up to date. This includes finding out how your customers are searching for you and new ways that you can promote yourself online.
